Culture may be defined, in general terms, as the summing-up of the totality of a way of life of a people. Thus, there is no ethnic group without its own culture.
In Kenya there is a cross-section of varied ethnic groups, each having its own rich cultural heritage. In this book, therefore, the author has provided information about the different aspects of material culture among these Kenyan peoples. He has classified material culture in the five categories of; Body Covers, Tools, Ornaments, Furniture and Containers.
In each classification examples are given using pictures and diagrams to reinforce the theoretical knowledge in five chapters.
The learner is also tested through exercises. The sixth chapter concludes with methods of collection, packaging, documentation, storage and preservation. There is also a list of Cultural Resource Centres. This book is, therefore, the ideal text for the student of practical arts and crafts.
