Gīcandī is an ancient Agīkūyū poem made up of elegantly elaborate enigmas, which were sung on public markets by two specially trained initiated people in competition. The rattle used to accompany the song was a bottle-shaped gourd, specially prepared by a seer: it bore, carved in it's side, writings in the mnemonic-pictorial system, the only specimen of this kind to be found among the Bantu tribes of Afrika!
