Gīcandī is an ancient Agīkūyū poem made up of elegantly elaborate enigmas, which were sung on public markets and special occasions by two specially trained initiated people in competition. Composed of reportedly over 150 stanzas, the rattle used to accompany the song was a bottle-shaped gourd. The gīcandī gourd was carefully perforated with thorns, then seeds were added to produce the sound of water dripping inside a cave! It bore, carved in it's side, hieroglyphic-like writings in the mnemonic-pictorial system, the only specimen of this kind to be found among the Bantu tribes of Africa.
